OpenTSDB and Central Query Failing

$

I've had my OpenTSDB and Central Query services failing for about 2 weeks now. It just happened over one weekend and I was unable to fix the issues since. I was originally on v 5.1.2, but just upgraded to 5.1.8 and the issue persists.

Opentsdb and central query are showing the red ! with answering. When I run journalctl -u serviced -fa on the resource host (resourceHost1IP) containing OpenTSDB, it keeps spitting out these entries:
Oct 27 12:31:46 fqdnhostname serviced[30976]: E1027 16:31:46.176896 30976 mux.go:137] got resourceHost1IP:22250 => resourceHost2IP:56600, could not dial to '172.17.0.3:4242' : dial tcp4 172.17.0.3:4242: connection refused

I can't figure out why this is happening.

Anyone got any ideas or things to check? I've already tried most of the things on https://support.zenoss.com/hc/en-us/articles/204643769-How-to-Recover-Control-Center-from-Hardware-Failure.

Any help would really be appreciated, Thanks.

Returning All Devices Running a Certain Process (and Similar Queries)

Let's say I want to generate a list of devices in the Zenoss enviroment running a given process, like mysqld. I know that I can look for process sets for a particular process class name in the GUI, but there's not a lot I can do with that output. Can I generate a simple report in Zenoss 5.x? Is it possible to search for a process string ad hoc, rather than search for process sets? Lastly, is this a job for which the API is better-suited? Thanks very much for your consideration.

Thanks!

Zenoss 5 problem when trying to install zenpacks

Hello,

When I run any command that starts with "serviced service" I get the following response: "coord-client: could not connect to a server". I am not sure if this is a problem with Zenoss or Red Hat linux.

I am working on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7.2 with Control Center version 1.1.2 and Zenoss core 5.1.5 installed.

Any advice on what is wrong would be amazing since I'm stuck right now with this issue.

Thanks,

Best Practice for adding user/groups to Zenoss RM v5?

What is the best practice for adding users and or groups to Zenoss v5.1.8 CC admin group? Do the users have to have access to the server group as well?

ZenOss and Cacti Issues

First off hello and thanks for allowing me to join your site.

I am working on an issue that I haven't been able to resolve.  Thought I would reach out to see if anyone has any recommendations.

Currently have a new environment that we are setting up for a new environment that is based on HP Blade hardware running Unix VM's for the application.  We have setup 2 Admin Server VM's in two different data centers.  We recently installed Cacti Hosts on two of them to monitor traffic and create reporting data for TPS and performance tuning/capacity planning, (currently use Cacti on our legacy system so management wants that used in the new environment.)   Problems I am seeing are now the two servers that are running Cacti are constantly showing "Unable to read process on device" and Network connection errors.  Inside the ZenOss site it shows that the nodes are bouncing up/down but the box is stable and functioning properly.  The issue can be reproduced via command line.  It appears to be a networking problem on the TOS01 node in both data centers.  When I manually query it – it starts returning data, then slows down – then times out.  Subsequent retries showed 100% timeout, connect with timeout …

I surmise the reason for the multiple emails is as follows:

  • Zenoss connects successfully to the TOS node and pulls snmp polling data.
  • Zenoss then times out attempting to poll the TOS – this triggers an SNMP down alarm and email is sent out as it’s seen as the 1st occurrence of the alarm.
  • Zenoss then re-connects to the TOS and pulls snmp polling data – this clears the SNMP down alarm.
  • This sequence repeats.(Alarm, Email, Successful Poll / Clear)

This hypothesis is backed up by the current count in Zenoss showing only 2 failures.  That Cacti and ZenOSS are competing for the same SNMPD resource(s).

System VM O/S:  Linux 2.6.32-642.el6.x86_64

ZenOSS Version:  ZenOSS5

Anyone got any ideas on how to get the two to play nicely?

Zenoss 5 is it just me ?

Hi everyone

I am fairly new to zenoss (couple of days playing with tool).coming from Sensu perspective it seems as Zenoss tries so hard to hide how it works. and it just shows you that it "running". but that has major drawbacks if you hit an issue you wouldn't know from where to start. Are they doing this deliberately so that we use the enterprise edition, or just lack of documentation ?

PS : this is not to discreet the enterprise edition just an honest overview of the tool for less than week

thanks

Minimal HDD Hardware requirements

In Zenoss Core Planning Guide i read:

1. Docker data storage Size: 50GB (minimum)

2. Control Center internal services data Size: 50GB (minimum)

3. Application data Size: 300GB (minimum)

4. Application data backups Size: 150GB (minimum; at least 50% of the application data size)

5. Control Center metadata (high-availability systems only) Size: 1GB

Which size of hdd i must to have for 90 days monitoring, If i have up to 100 nodes? I think 550GB too much.

Zenoss 4.2.5 auto deploy script problem?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has recently had any problems using the autodeploy scripts for Zenoss 4.2.5.

I had a successful time with these autodeploy scripts towards the end of September, but yesterday (Oct 8th) I came to re deploy Zenoss 4.2.5 from then on a new machine and ran into a problem.

Specifically, during the run of the script I get a problem with some dependencies (edited highlights shown below..):

I did a bit of digging and found that the epel-rpm-macros-6-14.noarch.rpm was updated at the start of October (see dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/x86_64/ ), so am wondering if this has upset things.

The changelog for that file seems to mention changing the python dependencies:

2016-10-03 - 6-14
- Drop py3 macro stubs now that we have python3 in EPEL6
2016-08-24 - 6-13
- Drop python macros; they're in the python-rpm-macros package now.
- Add dependency on the python-rpm-macros packages so that EPEL6 packages
don't
need to manually add a dep on them. (Python in RHEL6 can't be changed to
  require them.)
- Move the two stub python3 definitions from the python macro file into the
  main macro file.

 (taken from pkgs.org/centos-6/epel-i386/epel-rpm-macros-6-14.noarch.rpm.html)

Can anyone shed any light on this / any ideas of what to do to fix it?

Thanks

Upgrading a Zenoss 5.1.x development environment

$

I have a development environment specifically used for developing ZenPacks - Zenoss 5.1.5 with Control Center 1.1.7.  This is a Core environment.

I create and test ZenPacks using guidance from Chet about 5.x development environment - see http://zenpacklib.zenoss.com/en/latest/development-environment-5.html  .  Basically /z is shared between the base host and all containers; ZenPack development code goes under /z/zenpacks and I work with aliases provided in the article above so that, from the base host, I can run zenpack --link --install <zenpack> - just as I always did in Zenoss 4.  All works fine.   Toolbox tools run clean.

Wanted to upgrade to Control Center 1.1.9 and Zenoss 5.1.8.   Use the latest Upgrade Guide from the docs site.

CC is relatively smooth.  Document not totally clear that you do need to modify /etc/default/serviced with an amalgamation of the newly supplied serviced.rpmnew and your original serviced.  I also found that my original had a line with SERVICED_DM_THINPOOLDEV=/dev/mapper/serviced-serviced--pool - and I needed to put that in - didn't exist at all in the rpmnew file.

Big problems with upgrading Zenoss. It barfs on all my link-installed ZenPacks and the install finally gives up and abandons.  I repeat - this is a ZenPack development environment - it's raison d'etre is to have link-installed ZenPacks.

If you attach to the zope container as root, there is a /root/5.1.x directory, which amongst other files, has upgrade-core-5.1.x.sh and upgrade-core.txt.  The .txt file appears to be the steps to run with the last one being:

SVC_RUN "Zenoss.core/Zenoss/User Interface/Zope" upgrade

This txt file is run from the upgrade-core-5.1.x.sh file which runs:

serviced script run /root/5.1.x/upgrade-core.txt --service Zenoss.core

The fundamental problem is that my ZenPacks need access to my shared /z/zenpacks directory but the upgrade script doesn't have /z mounted.  Thus the existing link-installed ZenPacks are all "broken".  Worse still, the shellscript has "serviced script run..."; serviced script cannot take a mount parameter;  serviced service run can, but serviced script run cannot.

The way I finally kludged this was to comment out the "SVC_RUN "Zenoss.core/Zenoss/User Interface/Zope" upgrade" line in the txt file and then manually run:

serviced service run --mount /z,/z edvpiw0k718inm2qrpdmhp5as upgrade

where the weird id above is the container id for your Zope container.  This takes the --mount /z,/z making my shared directory hierarchy with ZenPacks, available to the upgrade process.  Don't forget to manually run the last line of the shellscript file - /opt/serviced/bin/serviced-set-version Zenoss.core 5.1.8.

There has to be a better way than this!  Also, if you need to run the upgrade, you will need to remove the snapshot that is taken as it has a fixed tag name of preupgrade-core-5.1.8.  The process is documented in chapter 4 of the upgrade guide.

Some of my Zenoss configuration has survived the upgrade; other hasn't.  Most of the ZenPacks are fine and work, with the exception of one reporting ZenPack.

Things that get lost are:

Any operating system utilities you have installed in containers

Any modifications to any code under /opt/zenoss/Products - I have a few tweaks I need to circumnavigate bugs.

Any modifications in /opt/zenoss/bin get lost.  I have a ZenPack that installs a daemon which needs files in /opt/zenoss/bin and in /opt/zenoss/Products/ZenRRD.  Had to manually copy them in the original install; had to recopy them again after upgrade.

Toolbox tools live under /opt/zenoss/bin so that has to be reinstalled!

Things that survive are:

Customisation for the zenoss user in containers - .ssh files, .vim files,..

General configuration all looks OK - conf files in /opt/zenoss/etc are all preserved as are SMTP setting and Googlemaps API keys.

Installed MIBs, Event classes and transforms all look OK.

There may be a better way of going about this.  If so, please can someone point me at the documentation.

I am hoping by giving this amount of detail, that:

a) Someone will annotate it with better procedures

b) Anyone else going down this route doesn't have to spend quite so long on it

Cheers,

Jane

Zenoss 5.x PagerDuty 1.10 Zenoss Server URL

Hi,

We are using "ZenPacks.PagerDuty.APINotification-1.1.0.egg" Zenpack with our Zenoss 5.1.5 setup.

ZEnoss server URL in incident alerts received from PagerDuty is set to "http://localhost:8080/zport/..."

I am wondering where the "localhost" is set with this zenpack.

I tried unpacking zenpack and searching for that string in it with no success.

Also the wiki page for Zenpack version 1.0 refers to added zProperties (including zPDZenossServer) but that property is not available with Zenpack version 1.1.0.

Can someone point me where this setting can be found?

Thanks

Update Zenoss Core 5 To Use System Time

$

Is there any way to change the time zone within Zenoss Core 5 containers? I would like to have it all based on my system time, but it seems that it is set to UTC.

With the DST time change a week or so ago in the US, I have had to update all of my notification schedules to account for the 1 hour difference. This would be a pain to have to do twice a year with the time changes.

Has anyone accomplished this? Thanks.

BIg IP (F5) Load balancer pool memebr monitoring

$

Hello,

Does anyone curently monitor Big IP (F5) pool members and generate events on the monitor and session status of each pool member? When you highlight a load balancer pool and the list the load balancer pool members, you can display the monitor status (as up or down) and the session status (as enabled or disabled). This corresponds to the number of active members shown in the details of the load balancer pool. There doesn't seem to be a way to generate events based on the load balancer pool member monitor status and session status. Has anyone been able to generate events on these statuses?

Thanks

Zenoss 4.2.5 WinRM ZenPack Problem

Not sure if this a possibilty. However, I'd like to monitor a Windows 7 box like I'm monitoring 2008R2 etc. Using 4.2.5 I've setup a new box and am configuring WinRM via a GPO. So far, the actual server OS's are ok.

When I add the Win7 machine to the /server/microsoft/windows class it errors on modelling the device.

ERROR zen.PythonClient: Error on IPADDRESS HERE: HTTP Unauthorized received on kerberos initialization. Kerberos error code -1765328343: Message stream modified.

There are about 10 of these lines

This is using the latest Window Zenpack and PythonCollector Zenpack

Will Zenoss 5.1 core work for me?

Hey

I am new to Zenoss world and  have following requirements can somebody please guide...

The queries are

Requirement:

 1. We need to monitor 100K devices, but those are all same kind of IoT devices and messaging framework would be ours.

 2. We would like to transfer/FTP data in bulk from those devices to Zenoss server using our pipeline and after which we would like further monitoring details.

 3. Due to 3rd party company policy we couldn't install any sort of agents on the device but we would be FTP'd data at central place and from there we could take care.

 4. Now since we are not suppose to receive direct data from 100K devices neither we could ssh/snmp to those devices, so will not limitation of 1000 devices be good enough? If not why?

 5.  Can we use ControlCenter with HBase support or OpenTSTB support as given in opensource/free-form  ?

 6.  OR can I use epuzanov/ZenPacks.community.DistributedCollectors which would apparently enable multiple hubs / multiple collectors & allow me to scale?

Thanks

Ramesh

Can't access Zope manage workspace

Greetings, folks!

I'm using Zenoss 5.1.2 pretty well but had a problem when was trying to configure LDAP Authentication.
At the Zport page everything at acl_users tab works fine, except for groupManager, roleManager and userManager.
Every of those asks for Zenoss main page authentication and my user and password are not accepted: "Your session has expired or you have entered an incorrect username or password". What information do i need to solve this?

Thanks in advance!

Integrate Zenoss 5 with Grafana 4

Anyone know how to connect zenoss 5 opentsdb to grafana? I can get the datasource to connect but none of my metrics display in the autopopulate for any of my devices. It only displays info for the container. I can also connect to opentsdb on port 4242 and it displays the same thing. Is there a setting or something to add to display all devices and metrics?
